Profiles of Near‐Surface Rock Mass Strength Across Gradients in Burial, Erosion, and Time

چکیده
Rock mass strength is recognized as an important control on landscape morphology and evolution. However, the controls rock in mountainous topography remain poorly characterized, part because remains challenging to quantify at spatial scales relevant geomorphology. Here we mechanical properties of masses using subsurface S-wave velocities, Schmidt hammer hardness values, Geological Strength Index (GSI) observations. We produce shallow depth profiles shear intact measured from a hammer, assessment structure surface conditions fractures GSI. apply these techniques Western Transverse Ranges, southern California, USA, where gradients stratigraphic age erosion rate allow us evaluate our methodology. resolve differences 200 kPa ∼5 MPa that appear be related diagenetic changes associated with maximum burial young clastic sedimentary rocks. For rocks same lithologic type, age, inferred histories, smaller (300 kPa–1.5 MPa) positively correlated mean rates. suggest increase increasing reflects decreased residence time weathering zone for ranges experiencing faster fault slip These findings demonstrate up order magnitude variability respect burial, erosion, lithologically similar As such, lithology alone unlikely adequately capture role

Temporal Variation Pattern of Runoff Generation and Rill Erosion in Different Soils and Slope Gradients
This study was conducted to investigate the temporal variations of runoff and rill erosion in various soil textures under different slope gradients. So, a laboratory experiment was set up in three soil textures (loam, clay loam, and sandy clay loam) and four slope gradients (5, 10, 15, and 20%) using the completely randomized design with three replications. Runoff production and rill erosion we...

evaluation of rock mass deformability
One of the most important effective parameters in design of engineering structures is deformability of rock mass. Benchmark of rock mass deformability is the deformation modulus that directly or indirectly obtained. Since the determination of rock mass deformation modulus indirect method by in-situ tests is time-consuming, costly and difficult from executive operations aspect, so it’s correctly...
متن کاملTectonics, fracturing of rock, and erosion
[1] We argue that by fracturing rock, not by raising it relative to base level, tectonics plays its most important role in causing rapid incision of valleys and rapid erosion of hillslopes. Tectonic deformation riddles the upper crust with fractures, which not only provide avenues for water flow and thus promote weathering and further disintegration of rock but also fragment bedrock into debris...
متن کاملEvaluation of Precipitation Products of TRMM Satellite in Precipitation and Erosion Rate Monitoring across Iran
Extended abstract 1- Introduction In order to calculate the erosive power of rainfall, high-resolution precipitation data are necessary for rainfall erosion evaluation. However, collecting the required data on kinetic energy of the rainfall particles and precipitation rates with short-term temporal resolution is a time-intensive task, particularly in developing countries, and the collecte...
